American cities are at a crossroads. More citizens than ever are living in urban centers where they confront challenges with deep historical roots: poverty, educational inequality, crumbling infrastructure and health disparities. The nation urgently needs solutions. What is the role of universities like Johns Hopkins in solving these problems? How can we bring partners in the private sector, the nonprofit foundations, municipal and state leaders and philanthropists together in the search for evidence-based answers?

Katherine S. Newman, PhD, an expert on poverty and the working poor and the James B. Knapp Dean of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, led a dialogue on the role of the university as a catalyst for revitalizing America’s cities.

Educators have long sought the optimal system for teaching diverse populations of children and adults. However, even individuals of the same age learn in vastly different ways. Imagine if we understood exactly how learning takes place within the brain, and not only relative to age but in the context of an individual’s home environment, cultural background, interests, learning styles and abilities.

David W. Andrews, PhD, dean of the university’s School of Education who has dedicated his career to improving academic and behavioral outcomes for at-risk children and youth, discussed how Johns Hopkins researchers and educators, using the latest advances in science and technology, are discovering how to personalize educational approaches and improve student achievement.
