6th Annual Johns Hopkins in Action: Baltimore|Washington day of service

Our sixth annual Johns Hopkins in Action Baltimore|Washington day of service gives you the chance to put the core values of the Rising to the Challenge campaign to work, helping to address significant issues facing our campuses, our communities, and our world.

Please select the project of your interest below and provide us with your contact information. Spots fill up quickly, so sign up early to ensure availability. If you would like to participate in more than one service project, please email Be sure to fill out one registration form for each volunteer in your group. You will receive a confirmation email with details of the project before May 5th.



Morning volunteer opportunities:

Packard Center Annual Fiesta 5K Run for ALS Research - Register
Time: 5:45 a.m. – 10 a.m. - Race begins at 8:00 a.m.

Description: The Fiesta 5K race is the signature event of the Robert Packard Center. In 2017, we welcomed over 65 teams, 1,300 participants and raised over $270,000. All proceeds from the Fiesta 5K will benefit the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins. The Center is the only international research organization dedicated solely to the disease. They bring together the best scientists from a variety of disciplines in an environment that removes barriers to collaboration and enables shared innovation. They drive new ways of thinking about ALS and help identify drug therapies to slow its progression. Volunteers will help with setup and registering runners. Time: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Description: Every year hundreds of teachers come to the Maryland Book Bank to gather books for their students and to build their classroom libraries. Families build home libraries and gather text books to homeschool their children. Head Start centers, Social Services, and more than 600 schools and organizations visit the Book Bank each year to get books for their programs. Books For Kids Day 2018 is Saturday, May 5th and is held in the parking lot of Poly Western High School. Our annual event is a time for us to celebrate the great work we do to help thousands of children each year and to say thank you to the many people who keep our programs going by volunteering their time. Volunteers will help with set up and check in, unload cars, sort books, greet donors, collect receipts, and box up books for transport.

Civic Works - Register
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m

Description: Civic Works strengthens Baltimore’s communities through education, skills development, and community service. Clifton Mansion, home of Johns Hopkins himself, serves as the headquarters for Civic Works’ community service programs and as an important resource for the neighborhoods surrounding Clifton Park. Volunteers will beautify and landscape the grounds of Clifton Mansion.

Description: Marian House is the leading organization offering high quality rehabilitative services and housing to homeless women and their children. They are focused on helping women break down the barriers of homelessness, heal from past traumas, and move towards a life of independence and wellness. Volunteers will help with spring cleaning the main house and garden.

A Wider Circle (SILVER SPRING SITE) - Register
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Description: The mission of A Wider Circle is simple: to end poverty for one individual and one family after another. We work in partnership with those we serve and with those seeking to help to ensure that every child and adult has the chance to succeed and the opportunity to live well. Volunteers will assist in restocking showroom floor, sorting and organizing incoming donations, and ensuring donations are in dignity condition for our clients. There are meaningful tasks for volunteers of all ages and abilities. You will be on your feet sorting and transporting items from warehouse to showroom floor. Free parking located next door at elementary school. Limited free parking on-site.

Blue Water Baltimore - Register 
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Description: In Baltimore, trash in our streams and along shorelines is a highly visible source of water pollution. Caused by illegal dumping and littering, debris in our streams is more than an eyesore. Trash in our waterways can be harmful to our health, the environment, and our local economy. Volunteers will remove trash from the shoreline of the Patapsco River at Middle Branch Park. Before we start, we will have a brief eco-literacy talk about problems/solutions for water quality in Baltimore and how we can work together for clean water and strong communities in our region.

Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Description: ShareBaby collects diapers, clothing, and other basic goods and distributes these items to families in need through community-based organizations. One in three American families with young children struggle to afford enough diapers and the consequences range from diaper rash and UTIs to maternal depression and increased incidence of child abuse. Help ShareBaby wrap diapers, sort clothing and create care packages for Baltimore’s neediest babies and young children.

Healthy Harbor - Register
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Description: Waterfront Partnership’s Healthy Harbor Initiative works to restore and protect our City’s most valuable asset—the Baltimore Harbor. Volunteers will focus on cleaning major corridors of southeast Baltimore, the gateways in and out of the city. Possible other activities such as tree-planting or fence painting as needed.

Afternoon volunteer opportunities:

Time: 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Description: Moveable Feast provides nutritious foods and other services in order to preserve quality of life for people with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening conditions. Volunteers will help prepare meals for individuals served by Moveable Feast. Volunteers must be 15 years old, wear closed toe shoes, no nail polish. Free street parking.
Location: 901 North Milton Avenue, 1st floor, Baltimore, MD 21205 (entrance is at the corner of Ashland and Milton)

Time: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Description: Patapsco Valley State Park is a public recreation area extending along 32 miles of the Patapsco River south and west of Baltimore City. The state park encompasses multiple developed areas on over 22,000 acres of land. Volunteers will remove trash and invasive plants.

Time: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Description: The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest organization in the Washington metropolitan area working to solve hunger and its companion problems: chronic undernutrition, heart disease, and obesity. This volunteer project will involve packing and/or sorting donated food. It also can include packing for Capital Area Food Bank programs, and assisting with various other tasks at the food bank.
