A Seat at the High Table, Supported by the Hopkins Parents Fund

About 900 Johns Hopkins University freshmen and 80 faculty members gathered recently for an evening of fine dining, celebratory toasts, and academic sparks at the sixth annual High Table.

Faculty robed in academic regalia, interspersed with students wearing their finest, filled the Ralph S. O'Connor Recreation Center, which is transformed for this event fashioned after the British tradition of Formal Hall.

“It’s a chance for students and faculty to get to know each other in a social setting, recalls Gaurav Verma, A&S ’17, about his own High Table.

“You get people exchanging ideas, talking about their interests in the field, and it fosters dialogue between people in different departments,” according to Verma, who adds the event was one highlight of his freshman year. “It definitely made me feel valued. It definitely made me feel like I had a voice in the community.”

High Table is one of many events supported by the Hopkins Parents Fund, dedicated to enriching the Homewood student experience.
