Peabody Institute


The Peabody Institute is the oldest conservatory in the United States and has a storied history. Over the years, great artists such as Peter Tchaikovsky, Anton Rubinstein, Igor Stravinsky, Nadia Boulanger, Leonard Bernstein, and James Levine have traversed our hallways. We count André Watts, Philip Glass, James Morris, Hilary Hahn, Tori Amos, and Dominick Argento among our illustrious alumni. Current faculty include leading artists such as Marin Alsop, Manuel Barrueco, Leon Fleisher, Denyce Graves, Marina Piccinini, and Kevin Puts. Now, Peabody seeks to lead the way in adapting to the changes in the American and international classical music landscape.

New Beginnings

Over the past two years, Dean Fred Bronstein and his staff have cast fresh eyes on Peabody's potential for even more profound levels of achievement. Our strategy focuses on four pillars, and donor support will be crucial to succeeding in each step.

  • Excellence: Raising the level of our core business, the Conservatory, by fine-tuning programs, focusing on specific areas of prominence, and becoming even more selective in recruitment of students and faculty. We should be as selective as the most competitive programs at Johns Hopkins. Our graduates will be among the most successful musicians competing for high-level opportunities and positions as soloists, orchestra members, chamber musicians, and educators. 
  • Interdisciplinary Experiences: Becoming the leader among schools of music and conservatories in providing interdisciplinary programs. As world-class conservatory linked with one of the world's leading research universities, Peabody is uniquely poised to develop innovative interdisciplinary programs of study that integrate music into liberal arts, science, medicine, and other professional areas while encouraging our faculty to be full collaborators in interdisciplinary research.
  • Innovation: Delivering Peabody faculty expertise well beyond our current student base. No other conservatory has yet claimed ownership of online programs and technological innovations in music study. We are uniquely suited to do so, building off the robust online presence of other Hopkins divisions. Peabody also must innovate in traditional classroom and studio settings, embracing technology and creativity in developing a curriculum for the 21st century musician, and driving the national dialogue about the value of music and the arts in today's society.
  • Community Connectivity: Building strong and well-considered relationships within the local region that will enable Peabody to better serve the community. We have an obligation as a leading cultural entity in Baltimore to reach deeply into its communities, developing meaningful partnerships and playing a role in fostering public interest in music. Today, musicians can no longer only rely on proficiency in their instrument; they must be communicators, educators, and advocates; in short, they must become citizen-artists. Through carefully crafted experiences outside the Conservatory walls, as well as within them, they can develop these necessary skills.

Peabody has a remarkable history, but to thrive in the 21st century, we must build upon it. Your gift to support scholarships, fellowships, professorships, technological innovation, and community outreach funds will ensure that Peabody succeeds in achieving the goals set by our four pillars.
