Rising to the Challenge: San Francisco

President Daniels: "The creation of this ecosystem is essential to our mission to bring our discoveries into the lives of those we serve. As important, a robust innovation ecosystem is essential to our commitment to our communities."

Discover and share with others how Johns Hopkins entrepreneurs are bringing life-changing innovations out of the lab and into the world through commercialization

"There's no question that Johns Hopkins is a prolific engine of ideas, from our work staunching the spread of HIV, to this summer's historic and quite amazing fly-by mission to Pluto, to the creation of a new class of prosthetic limbs that can be controlled by brain impulses alone," said President Ron Daniels in welcoming alumni, parents, and friends on April 28 to Rising to the Challenge: San Francisco.

"It’s truly extraordinary — the breadth, the reach, the imagination of ideas that come from Johns Hopkins. It's also true," the president noted, "that we have to be deliberate and strategic in cultivating a more robust innovation ecosystem within our academic community to support the entrepreneurial aspirations of our faculty, students, and staff."

In all, 300 members of the Hopkins community gathered — more than half at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton, the rest tuning in from across the country and around the world for a live online broadcast. All had the chance to engage in lively conversation and explore the role that innovation and entrepreneurship are playing on Johns Hopkins campuses, and just as important, in our communities.

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures — a university-wide initiative and priority of the Rising to the Challenge campaign — aims to improve life for millions by accelerating the implementation of brilliant ideas; attracting and retaining entrepreneurial faculty and students; providing the university a new source of revenue that may be re-invested in research, educational, clinical, and service activities; and catalyzing economic development in Baltimore.
